I am going to be new to the scooter owning world by the end of the week. I've tried finding insurance, but the insurance companies I've talked with aren't into insuring scooters. I would like advice on how to get insurance. I am live very near the MN State Fair Grounds. Thank you,
Mike Fox

Don't call it a scooter. Call it a motorbike.

State Farm has been fine for me. About 125/yr for my Bajaj.

i just called the people that insure my car. american family.
told them it was a scooter and the lady on the phone wasn't even sure that they insured them. she did some research on their end and now my insurance card says that's it's a motorcycle. whoopie! $80/year isn't that bad.
i live near como park. let me know if you wanna ride around town sometime.

Just a suggestion: pay a few bucks extra and max out the Underinsured Motorists coverage. I'm not selling! I'm just somebody who got hit by someone who didn't have enough coverage to pay all my bills. Luckily i had some underinsured motorists coverage and will get some $$ from my own insurance. This whole accident has been like taking a graduate level course in medical billing, insurance and Minnesota accident law. After my accident I maxed out all my insurance: car and scooter. The difference in price was minimal. I never really thought about accidents because I'd never been in one; but, i learned pretty quickly that its not about how injured you are: its all about WHO hit you and how much insurance coverage they have and how much personal wealth because most people don't have enough coverage for serious accidents but if they don't have any money there is no money to sue for and the bills are all on you.

anyway not trying to be a downer just offering up some hard learned advice.

Enjoy this awesome scootering weather!!!! I'm jealous! Is it just me are there more scooters out this year. I think i see a couple of scoots everyday!!

Try Progessive Insurance they specialize in scooter and cmotorycle insurance. My auto/home agent hooked me up with them. Or you can do the whole thing online at http://wwww.progressive.com/ You can get online quotes and do the whole deal in minutes, if you like. Mine is $136 for pretty much everything. Geico's quote for similar coverage was about $100 more.

I live in the como Park area too; Energy Park. Running a Mint Stella.

I pay $125/yr through American Family for $250 deductable full replacement coverage on the Stella. We'll be getting the '63 VNB appraised as soon as we pick it up so we don't get screwed that way.

"Oh, your 43 year-old moped was stolen? Here's $20."

Progressive insurance gets my vote, I have one motorcycle and three scooters insured through them. Never had to say "scooter" or "motorbike", just gave the agent the manufacturer, model , and VIN. VERY cheap.... but then again I'm an old man...

I also agree STRONGLY about getting more coverage than the minimums, it's relativeley inexpensive and can make a huge difference if you have a claim.

Okay, wow. Calling it a motorbike helped a lot. Calling an agent instead of using the internet also helps a lot. Thank you all! One more question, however: how often has anyone had the need to use their insurance? Are claims more frequent than, say, for a car? Are comprehensive claims (thefts, etc.) more common than collision claims?

Re-read ann's post. Cover as much % as you would with your car. Theft/damage etc.
