As of now I do not believe you need a passport, although I would highly recommend getting one.

As of midnight Jan 1 2007, you'll need a passport at air and sea border crossings, and as of midnight Jan 1 2008, you'll need one for land border crossings

I'd say get a passport anyway. Last July we went to the winnipeg folk fest (in a car), and they pulled my husband, my almost 2 year old daughter and myself in to have some interrogating because we didn't have passports.

Come to think of it, maybe it was because we had too much liquor, but I'd say show up w/ a passport even though its not required yet--hanging out with the border patrol's not that exciting.

We (the boyz, my mom and my best friend) went to Canada just last week.
We were already up in the UP and decided to go to Sault St Marie.
My friend was the only one who had a passport and when we were trying to get into Canada, they did a brief search on her vehicle.
My mom and I only had our state id's and for the boyz I brought copies of their birth cert's and a noterized letter from Dh stating he knew what I was doing and that it was ok to take his kids out of the country.

We had no issues entering Canada or coming back into the U.S.
Of course we we're only there for a few hours and didn't really buy anything so we had nothing to declare.
