Marshalltown Iowa. It's on a Saturday, so driving down Friday night to a hotel in Ames is a pretty good idea, then driving back on Saturday.
All you really need is a good jacket, boots, gloves, and a full face helmet for protection. They say jeans are fine but you'd be smrt to wear something stronger. No need to safety wire your bike, just tapeing off your lights would be fine.
I think it's $30 for as much as you want to do.
It's not all about speed if you don't want to. It's a good way to learn your bike. |

There's a decent hotel right in Marshalltown. Right on the main drag.

Man I thought all you new guys rode your scooters, or is it only just really slow around the parkway?

Nah, I'm busy that weekend. Besides, I think one of my crappy Indian bearings is failing, so I'm taking it a little easier while I think about how I want to replace it... |

Heh, yeah, I could do that. I'm kind of thinking a worb5 crank though - they're highly regarded. Opinions? |

Should do a little cost benefit analysis.
Are you assuming that you'll buy the parts and do it yourself or hire someone at $75/hour to essentially rebuild the motor?
A new P200 motor is 1500 bucks. How is buying that and selling your motor for repair vs. having someone rebuild yours to your specs with parts work out?
Just trying to help your case with the wife... |

I don't know, i suppose I'll make the call when the bearing actually fails. Though since it's getting noisy, that day's probably sooner rather than later. |

If Brad thinks it's perfectly reasonable to get a new engine when all you need are bearings, I really should of tried to sell him a lot more stuff back when...
I don't think you can go wrong with a Worb5 crank, but I'm sure new bearings and any crank would be just fine for what you got. If you are thinking of going nuts later then it might be a good idea to get it. |

waste of money. Good bearings, stock crank, light tune, 24/24 carby and your golden. Don't waste your money on shipping that heavy shit over from Germany. I mean really are you going to race that thing? Go with a Mazzy crank and use the rest of the money to pay someone to put it in. I'd like to suggest Derrick for that part. But if you've got the money to spend on that shit I'd like it better if you'd just buy me beer. Yes that's it, buy me beer.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm on the fence on whether to do it myself or have somebody do it. I've done most of my work myself so far, but haven't ever split the cases. Obviously the project is a lot cheaper if I successfully do it myself, but I don't want to be down for weeks if I fuck it up... Matt, what (cheaper) crank do you recommend? |

I have a cut mazz on my P210 and am happy with it, it's only a few bucks more than the stock one. Looks like prices have gone up, so not much cheaper than Germany but you'll save shipping. We just did a Scooter-Center order the other day! Who know may need more stuff later.
For sure buy everything and be ready, it would be smarter to rebuild it before it goes, or else you'll probably be abuying lot more stuff than you want to. |

Oh, I bet you could still sell me stuff. I was half-kidding about the P200 engine. Just thinking about labor, how these things get out of hand, and the fact that Tom uses this as a daily rider going thousands of miles a year. I agree that it could become a lot more expensive to rebuild if the bearings go, at say 7,000 rpm. You guys are far more mechanical than I.
So while Tom has the cases split, and adds the new crank, bearings and seals, should he upgear at the same time so he can get some speed out of this beast? Also port to match whatever cylinder kit he is using?
I think we are describing what Tom R did to the GS he won from Scooterworks. He's using a Pinasco cylinder with matching ports, upgeared, 24/24 carb, and Sito - it goes about 75 (really - it pulled away like we were standing still coming back from Duluth), faster than one of the Fireballs with a P200 in it. A sleeper with that Sito exaust, looks stock. It seemed reliable - he put over 450 miles on it the day he rode with us. |
