I was trying to replace my speedometer cable today and this sounds strange, but the cable only moves (rotates) when I spin the wheel backwards...did I install something wrong?

Could you help out and let me know what I installed incorrectly. One other thing, should I be able to hand turn the speedometer cable and see the speedometer needle move?

I installed a new speedomter cable, pinion gear (if thats what it is called) and a new speedometer.

Good thing this isn't Minne-grammar-a, or we'd have to start giving Derrick a hard time.

How do you install a speedometer pinion gear without destroying it while turning the wheel?

Thanks for all the help, I figured it out. I didn't need the hammer after all; although I had one ready.

When I attached the speedometer cable to the speedometer it was too tight and the speedometer cable wouldn't turn. When the speedometer cable (that wouldn't turn) was attached to the pinion gear the pinion gear was stuck. When I turned the wheel the gears in the wheel crushed the pinion gear.

I put a washer in between the speedometer and the speedometer cable, and now everything moves like it is suppose to.

Its a good thing they made the pinion gear out of plastic.
