If you lock your car, then they just bust the window. Then you get ripped off and need to pay for glass. If I do lock the car, I empty the car and leave the glove box and center console flipped open to show they are empty. They still ripped off my stereo once, and even though a neighbor called the cops because they broke a window on his car too, one of them out ran the flat footed badges. I did get my stereo back, but swore the whole time I tried to rewire it where they tore it out. Morons just had to unplug it, but they ripped it out by the wires instead. The one low life scum the police did catch that night had stolen a car from his own grandmother and was using it when they caught him to rip other people off. Apparently the grandmother pressed charges for the auto theft. Grandma was mighty pissed I would guess. That made my day when I heard that...

I hate thieving bastards! Sorry for your loss. Larceny and burglaries are on the upswing, so you can't be too careful. But, as this thread has nothing to do with "General Scootering", whoever he is, please allow me to re-direct this towards scooter theft and what one can do to prevent it.
What do you use to secure your scooter when it's parked up somewhere (this can include the useless column lock)? How about when it's at home (garage, ground anchors and chains/cables, etc.)? Do you have an alarm system? Immobilizer (standard on new auto-vespas)? What do you do if you see someone sitting on or screwing around with your scooter?
(Please be general about anti-theft products/tactics used, to prevent any of the thieving bastards, assuming they can read, from using said info to their advantage.)

I just don't take my scooter anywhere that it might be stolen. It's nice and safe in <undisclosed location> where I visit it fortnightly so I can polish the chrome and sit on it while making "Vroom vroom! Beep!" noises. It's pretty awesome.
