OK. So I rode the Ural instead of the Stella, but only because I needed to ride highways today. Even with heated grips, electric gloves on on the list for next year.

Wow, you mean one of these?!

I'm just wondering if my Vespa will even start at these temperatures, and if it's healthy to run it. I almost want to try it just to say I rode 2 miles in 10 below zero weather.

It should run. The only real issue is lubrication - not such a big deal for the two-strokes (our oil is very thin and in our gas anyway), but it's hard for a weak starter to crank against maple syrup oil, and oil gets very thick in cold weather.

Once it's running it'll warm up and run pretty much like it does on any day - a bit leaner, assuming it's carburetted, but as long as the engine isn't racing, just take it easy and it'll be fine. Give the oil a good while to warm up before you push it though - you want to make sure the oil is flowing well before you do anything that'll get parts too hot.

And really, those of us who ride in this crap can say there's nothing heroic about riding in it - but it *is* fun, until you lose feeling in your fingers.

My Stella ran fine in similar temps last year. It's stored right now due to (non-temp-related) oil flow problems.

I went 11 miles in -17 last year, I think you'll be fine.
