Things went really wrong at the start for Group 6 at the vintage races held at Road America last weekend. No one was hurt seriously, but the carnage could make you cry. These are all nearly priceless cars, most with excellent provenance.

Of course, there are fingers being pointed in several directions. Group 6 is always a big field and seems to attract the testosterone crowd (V8's, Americ'n cars)
Most people seem to agree that the field was somewhat split on the pace lap. The green was waved a little late. So the front group was still at pace speed, waiting for the green. The guys at the rear, anticipating a green and wanting to catch up, were pouring it on. Somebody bumped somebody & chaos ensued. Then, some tail end cars ignored a red flag at 14 & continued to try to drive through the mess. There are also reports that somebody blew up at start/finish & dumped oil. |

Track time, but shared with other small displacement bikes. Marshalltown Iowa and I think it's like $35 for the whole day. I'm not 100% sure I can make it yet, I'd be leaving that morning and coming back that night. Here is a link to the club putting it on.

I would like to try to improve my skill by doing that at some point and thought watching might be a good idea (have to ease into these things, besides, I don't have all the appropriate stuff to do it) but just realized this weekend might be tough. |
