So almost everyday (in the winter) I ride my bicycle to work. I cut through a section of the University on the West Bank and I see this Elite 150 chained up to a bike rack. I started noticing it about April or May of last year. I saw it in rain showers, buried in so much snow that the only thing visible was a mirror, and sat on by drunk college students at three in the morning. I've gone over and looked at it, it looks like, though weather beaten, to be in nice condition. No rust (yet), and solid.

I have an Elite 150 in my garage at home which is beat to shit, but I have the engine (all over my garage floor) and lots of parts. First off, anyone know who this scooter belongs to? Secondly, at what point should I just cut it free and bring it home. I keep expecting it to be gone, destined for a City Auction or something.

Any thoughts,

Steven

Good question. Does it have a plate on it? is it on campus, I'm surprised it hasn't been towed if it's on campus. A year seems like a long enough time, but would suck if it was reported stolen.

Report it to the U police, then check to see who they sent it to and when it goes up for auction.

I can just see it...

The gal finishes her PhD and finally has time to ride. The weather is nice and it's to go.. but where did the scooter go!?!?! Don't end up on the stolen site.

First thought: It's not yours. Don't touch.

Second thought: A registration search can be done with either the VIN or plate number. Find the owner - could be they'd be willing to unload it cheap.

Cool, thank you for the insights. Hmm, don't touch it's not mine, or boltcutters and a getaway car?

I've decided to stay on the same road I've been going down. I'll just watch as the poor thing starts to rust and eventually returns to the earth (with the exception of the rubber tires or course).

Thanks again.

I don't know, I think spikehead's on to something. Do a title search, offer the owner a small amount of cash for it, see what they say.

So this isn't the Aero 80 Elite I saw today, chained to a bike rack, with wisc 2004 plates that looks like it hasn't moved in awhile?

I think we should offer to pick up all abandoned scooters at the U as a public service. Call it spring cleanup.

No, the Aero is the one located by the Carlson building, I have seen that one sitting there over the winter as well, the Elite is about two blocks East, and around the other side of a large building, I'm not sure what building. But I did notice that this morning they were cleaning the area right around the Aero and the bike racks, so its time may be limited. That scoot looks to be in good shape also.

I think the more sinister issue is this: what's happening to scooter owners at the U? Where are they that their scooters sit chained, rusting? Are they sitting in some basement, rusting, themselves? When you do the title search, go to the authorities if there is some correlation. You know, blonde, 21, last know "Katzenjammer", whatever.

Creepy.

By the way, I just watched "Hostel". Total shit. That's two hours of my life I won't get back.
