Well, the fact that they look nearly identical and most of the parts are interchangable. What happens when you need a new fender and you get one that Scooterworks gets from LML? Is your scoot now an Italian/Indian hybrid?

I'll be riding my Stella because, well, we don't have the VNB until next month. I wouldn't ride a Baron or a Helix to this, but I think a Stella is perfectly acceptable for what they're looking for.

Oooh, I'm sorry to miss this event, too. Going to be up north this weekend.

Here's my claim to fame: Dan Chouinard & I were in the same graduating class of the prestigious Chisago Lakes Senior High. He spent more time in the classrooms and bandrooms, I was in the art studios & parking lot mostly.

I wouldn't say MOST parts are interchangable between a Italian PX Vespa and an Indian Stella. I think that's a bit optimistic.

But ya, they do look alike.

Either way neither have much in common with "vintage" Italian scooters.

And that has everything to do with what you mean by "vintage". Yet again, a word that has a specific meaning is redefined by a particular community.

The dictionary defines "vintage" (the adjective) as:

1. Of or relating to a vintage.
2. Characterized by excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; classic.
3. Old or outmoded.


Any-hoo, this particular topic is hardly the place to discuss this particular issue.

The state of Minnesota will let you put "classic" plates on a vehicle as recent as 1981. That means three years of P-series Vespas are now legally classics, i.e., vintage. So there!

Of course, handlebar vespas are now legally "antique"...

We've had this discussion before. It's just your basic religious war : )

I always thought it was vintage, classic, and modern. Vintage being everything before Vespa left the country the first time (1981?), classic being metal-bodied shifters after 1981, and modern being everything else.

P's are kind of odd ducks, they fit in a couple of categories. Purists don't consider them vintage. But they get to go on vintage rides if they were here when Vespa was in the US the first time around.

I don't care what the state says is "antique". They are hardly an authority on vintage scooters! Shit they don't even know how to classify them.

I think most vintage enthusiasts would consider PRE-P series Vespas as vintage. Some would include them but most would not. P's are really the first "modern" Vespas.

I think there was a "golden" age of Italian scooters that was begining in the mid 50's and continued until the late 60's. Vespas and lambrettas were at their pinnacle of style and design. Piaggio and Innocenti were world leaders in manufacturing. Having worked on almost every model of Vespa and Lambretta, I can say those years are really their best. Total style and function without compromise. Without this "golden" age I don't think scooters would be as popular today.

I think it would be strange to celebrate the "Italian verve of the era" with modern Indian or Chinese scooters.

However, it is true that most novice scooter folk would think this is appropriate.

Hell, aren't all scooters Vespas?
