Per request and instruction from Lisa, I have reposted this help request here.
kennylibido wrote: | Hello all,
I'm in the midst of plotting out the route for the so-called "city ride" for the rally and am looking for six or seven blockers. I am going to lock down the route in the next two weeks and hope some of you who volunteer can help me iron out problems seeing as I'm sitting in Chicago and have only digital technology to assist me.
I had several impromptu blockers last year and learned a few things to not repeat such as my failure to disseminate the route properly beforehand and not getting committed blockers, things I will not do again.
If you are kind enough to help out, please email me at to let me know as soon as possible. I am planning on a route that is very urban - I hope to ride in both downtowns and through some denser areas where we will be seen. The route will be slower, likely around 20 to 25 mph. Blocking is relatively easy but requires steady nerves and the ability to push to the front of the group from the back after having protected an intersection for the riders.
I'm also amenable, do a degree, to negotiating the route and will happily bounce around feedback.
Let me know if you're in at your very earliest convenience.
Thanks,
Joe. | |

OK I'm in, but it sounds like we need 4-5 more experienced riders to really make this work smoothly. Plenty of room for more. Let's meet for a city ride planning session on an upcoming sunday, either the 16th or the 23rd. We can ride the route and make our riding plan. |

We were going over the family calendar and I've made a horrid mistake. Turns out I'm in Vegas the weekend of the rally. So much for helping with/leading the city ride.
I'll deal with the overall implications of missing the WHOLE RALLY later.

Joe, does this mean we need a city ride leader or are you able to jump back in? Let me know. |

I'm able to lead but we really do need more folks to block. |

Hey LoremIPSUM,
Are you able to help with blocking?
I know you're lurking around here somewhere. Don't make me come looking for you.
Joe. |

I replied to your PM. Or at least I thought I did.
Yeah, I can block.
Jeff, let me know if you want someone to go with you when you go for a test run. |

Yikes.
Just went to look at the PMs and saw you did, indeed, send me your courtesy - I overlooked it. I owe you a beer.
Thank you, sir.

Alright folks,
It ain't over til the skinny dude whines. I'm completely on until I'm completely off. Here's a thought. If any of you weenies anticipating doing the city ride have concerns about blocking, email me about your issues so I can allay them. This is going to be a slow, consistent ride with anywhere from 60 to 100 riders and it's mostly a hustle to the front after having blocked. The route is wide-open except for a few, very few, spots. Trust me, I'm no danger-boy, but it sure is fun and folks love to be herded. After the ride, men will bow down before you and women will ask to birth your baby, although this usually involves a zip-loc baggie and porn.
That being said, It'd be great if some of you considered and did this - I've done it for the last three Dus and have nothing but abject joy doing it. Matt, the ride leader for the "big bike" ride, has weighed in with a courteous caveat that he might modify that ride to accomodate everyone but I think it's not neccessary. There are too many fine riders out there to willfully make a merging of two-rides-into-one mercilessly mediocre for everyone. Too many riders on one ride sucks.
Rise up. Rise up, I say, against the low road. Come to me. Come to me, I say! Let us lead the humble slow-riders to glory! We are what we are and have nothing to fear!
Seriously, however, think about it and let me know soon.
It's important. I have a flock to lead and you, a flock to shepherd. |

OK, I'm not sure I'm qualified to volunteer here, but if you need someone to tail this thing I will throw my hat in the ring. I went on the ride last year and was actually the slowest bike there, so charmically I'm pretty sure it would make sense for me to follow at the end.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to being able to keep up, and it would be near tragic if the city ride got cancelled. I'm not sure I have the experience to block, but maybe this would cross something off of your list? |

OK,
Jeff, Jamie, David, and Mopedgirl are in, so far. If you responded to me earlier and I haven't acknowledged you, please let me know. Jeff, David, and Jamie will be blocking. Mopedgirl (what is your name, by the way?) will be tail-gunner. We're going to need at least two or three more folks to block.
I will finalize the route plans in the next week and email you all the info. I am going to be in Minneapolis on the Thursday and Friday before the rally and will make a test run on one or both days. If you are available on one or both days, let me know. In any event, you should try to make the run yourself to become familiar with it so we can discuss any issues.
Hey, Mike, with the German Silverwing, are you still around? If so, are you willing to help out? |

Joe-
Realized after I posted that I should have included a name--oops.
I don't remember how this worked exactly, but if you need a second tail gunner my usual scooter partneer has no computer (I know, who would of thought that could happen?) and I could probably talk her into volunteering also--let me know.

I enjoyed blocking on the short ride last year and would be glad to help again. Even though I live down here in Mankato, I recently left Minneapolis & I'm an old St. Paul Eastsider- so as long as I know the route, I won't have any problems. What's the route?
