I have to say that crashes are VERY common among new riders. I don't know your experience level but I do know that people with little or no experience on two wheeled vehicles are much more prone to crashing.
Please, if you are new to riding a scooter, go to an isolated parking lot and practise riding for a whole day or more before you ride on the street with traffic. Motorcycle school is also a huge help.
Don't let a scooters size fool you. They are just as dangerous as a motorcycle.
Nimbleboy, don't take this wrong. It could happen to anyone at anytime. I'm just voicing my opinion for new and future riders. Get well soon.

Bummer! Heal well. If it is any consolation, my boyfriend dumped his brand new stella on Saturday, the first day he rode it. Fortunately no sling. (I checked that box last year in the rain on memorial day). It is easy to do!
bummer but glad to hear it wasn't worse. now you can maybe join the most unique scooter customization group... the crash. i put my stella down on gravel about a week before the 2003 rally and botched the fender. kept meaning to fix it, but now i kinda like it. :)
here's hoping you can look back on your scratches and smile.
