I've heard that one can shit-can the god awful ugly DOT tail light assembly in lieu of one of the much cooler GS/SS/GL/etc. styles. Is this possible? Do these units have license plate illumination? Does the swap either leave visible existing mounting holes or require new?

So many questions...

yes. it is possible to ditch the red-lunchbox tail light.
I bought a bajaj "GS" style ass'y from ASC (i think). It was only about $35. The holes don't match up, but I don't see the old ones. It's all still beneath the light.
as far as licensce plate illumination, just replace the tail light bulb with a 10W... probably not DOT approved, but it's brighter and you can still see the brake light just fine.

-oh yeah, be sure not to install the 6v bulbs they send you for a 12v system...i would imagine they would blow pretty fast.
